One of my all time favourite TV shows comes, unsurprisingly, from late 1970s Great Britain. Created by Brian Clemens (the creative force behind the original The Avengers spy-fi show in the 1960s), The Professionals shows us the work of CI5, a mysterious and entirely fictional British intelligence department with an extremely broad remit. Led by George Cowley, no-nonsense Scotsman (Gordon Jackson), CI5’s jurisdiction covers the United Kingdom and includes everything from small crime to large-scale terrorism. Their two top operatives are Ray Doyle and William Bodie (Martin Shaw and Lewis Collins, respectively), a pair who couldn’t be more different if they tried. Together, Cowley, Doyle, and Bodie fight to keep the British public safe from any and all threats by whatever means necessary.
I decided to create a poster for the show, featuring one of the unrecognised stars, the dependable and speedy Ford Capri! I was inspired by 1980s poster styles, though the bottom half is rather more 1990s. The green colour palette is taken from the opening title card, which you can find here. The logos are those of London Weekend Television and Avengers-Mark 1 Productions, the companies responsible for turning out the show’s 57 episodes.
